Choosing furniture is highly personal and what appeals to one person would be rejected by another. Some rules do apply to choosing furniture. You need to consider:

• The age of your property. If it is an old house with antique fixtures then modern, brightly colored furnishings may look out of place.

• The existing furnishings. If you already have carpet and some furniture in a room, you need to complement or contrast with the existing colors and materials. A good contrast is always better than a bad match.

• Your family situation. If you have young children, furniture needs to be functional and easy to clean. Glass furniture is not practical with young children who put finger marks on everything and solid wood is expensive to restore if it gets scratched or watermarked. However if you are furnishing a smart loft apartment, glass, chrome and light woods look very minimalist and chic.

• Your budget. Even if you have a very low budget, pre-owned and self assembly furniture are both good options for saving money. A few DIY skills can also be useful for repairing and reupholstering old furniture, making it look like new.
